Understanding 1 John

First John gives assurance of eternal life and tests genuine fellowship with God. True believers trust Jesus Christ, obey God, reject persistent sin and false teaching, and love other Christians.
John writes so believers may share fellowship with God and have assurance of eternal life. God is light, so genuine fellowship includes honest confession, cleansing through Jesus, and a growing pattern of obedience.
Tests of authentic faith recur throughout the letter: right belief about Jesus Christ, righteousness rather than habitual rebellion, and practical love for fellow believers. These are signs of new life, not ways of earning it.
God is love, and His love is displayed by sending His Son. Perfect love drives out fear of judgment, the Spirit confirms the truth, and faith in Christ gives confidence in prayer and victory over the world.
1 John invites readers to consider assurance, truth, love and to respond to God with thoughtful faith and faithful action. Its message contributes to the Bible’s larger story of creation, covenant, redemption, and the hope ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV).
