Understanding Obadiah

Obadiah condemns Edom for pride and for taking advantage of Judah’s destruction. The shortest Old Testament book announces that God will judge arrogant nations and establish His kingdom.
Obadiah addresses Edom, a nation related to Judah through Esau. When Jerusalem suffered invasion, Edom watched with satisfaction, plundered the city, and blocked survivors instead of helping its brother nation.
The prophecy identifies pride as Edom’s central deception. Mountain strongholds and political security cannot protect a people from the Lord, and the violence done to others will return upon the offender.
Edom’s judgment becomes part of the wider day of the Lord upon all nations. The closing declaration that the kingdom belongs to the Lord shifts attention from human arrogance to God’s final and just rule.
Obadiah invites readers to consider pride, justice, kingdom and to respond to God with thoughtful faith and faithful action. Its message contributes to the Bible’s larger story of creation, covenant, redemption, and the hope ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV).
